I'll wager that 95% of motorcyclists riding the Blue Ridge stay within 5 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I will also wager that most motorcyclists prefer to stay at the many Inns and Hotels along the Parkway as well.
And that's fine! Invisible Roads remain invisible and Will Beer's Willville T.W.O. (Two Wheels Only) Campground remains pristine. I know Willville to be one of the best campgrounds in the Appalachians. I've been plenty of times and can attest to a fine camping experience. Will has got a nice touch.
Will has been riding "a secret" region along the Parkway for years. So have I. It's called the Roanoke Plateau. It's not a ridge. Essentially it's wide, high ground for many, many square miles with very little settlement. This land was the last area along the Blue Ridge to be developed by government engineers back in the 1920's and 1930's putting in roads and schools etc. It's a very rural area sliced and diced by rivers, creeks and streams. The motorcycling is some of the best found anywhere in the country!
I will be encamped for 2 weeks at Willville (www.willvillebikecamp.com) and giving daily, revolving Workshops. You can sign up for a Workshop by reservation (preferred) or by just showing up. If we have space, you're in!
We'll actually meet up at The Poor Farmer's Market (www.poorfarmersmarket.biz) at 7:30 AM for a genuine country breakfast. You'll be glad to know I am punctual.
Introductions will be made and I'll review the highlights of the day's tour, the Course Syllabus and your wireless radio. From there we'll disappear onto 1 of 2 very cool selections of former game trails turned Invisible Roads for a most satisfying day of motorcycling and education where I will review the entire Course Syllabus.
Both these Workshops are circuit routes. We'll return to Willville in late afternoon. There will be plenty of stops along the way. Lunch will either be at Tuggles Gap, Virginia or at the General Store in Burkes Garden Virginia. Both routes are roughly 230 miles long.
After your Workshop you'll be better equipped with the knowledge and skills to better enjoy what the fabulous Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Tail of the Dragon at Deal's Gap have to offer.
For camping, you'll want to bring your own gear.
For folks who prefer their own shower and a comfortable bed, here are two excellent suggestions within easy striking distance: The Pine Tavern in Floyd, Virginia. I've stayed here many times. I love it. Speak with Kathleen. 540-745-4428.
You can also book a super clean, rustic cabin tucked away along the Parkway. Speak with Felecia. 276-952-2670. Other Tours: |
After you have taken a one day workshop, you will want to sign up for a 2010 Rider's Workshop Weekend Tour!
